One exhibitor I was especially interested in checking out at IDS was SUNG Outdoor. I saw a teaser for the spring collection in a magazine and have been sniffing around online trying to find more information about it. Because it’s BLACKWATCH PLAID PRINTED FAUX WICKER. Oh. Mygosh. It is lovely and perfect and basically designed just for me. I’ve been obsessed with tartan and especially blackwatch since kindergarten. And while we got good use out of our IKEA deck furniture last summer (BBQs!), our back patio was left woefully bare and mostly unused. It’s a shame, because it’s a great deck – it gets direct afternoon and evening sun, and is big enough for a small gathering of people (or just me and Munch).

In person, the pieces are gorgeous and tactile and beautifully woven and SO BLACKWATCH. Alfred Sung is a genius. The frame is solid lightweight aluminum and can stay outdoors year-round minus the cushions. The prices are extremely reasonable — I was surprised, I thought it was going to be well out of our budget — so I ordered the whole set on the spot: Two club chairs, a loveseat, side table and ottoman. We met Saul Mimran, Alfred Sung’s business partner for 30 years, and his son Jordin.

I had no idea Alfred Sung was Canadian (I’m new here!) — in fact, Henry’s parents knew the Mimran brothers (Saul and Joe) in their school days at Forest Hill Collegiate. They seem like really nice, interesting, talented people who love Canada and love Toronto. I feel a bit of brand loyalty coming on.

The Blackwatch collection is only available at IDS11 (runs through Jan. 30 at the convention centre).
