The Nippon Sharyo bilevel gallery cars have a strange design.
The middle of the second level is open in the middle to see the ground-level floor. The stairs and catwalk of the second floor are very narrow. Above the middle opening is a storage table.
The cars are also in divided compartments. There is a center door for entry and exit, and then there are a set of double doors for the passenger compartments. The rows of seats face the double doors.
The Bombardier bilevel cars, used on Caltrain and many commuter rail systems in the U.S. and Canada, are better designed.
