Hand Middle School, Shandon neighborhood near Five Points in Columbia. Originally constructed in 1930 with additions c.1940. Total renovation of original structure and major additions, including separate gym, auditorium and cafeteria, were completed in 2008. Additions designed to match original architectural style and materials. Currently seats 850 students. Total cost for project was approximately ,000,000.
Maintaining old school ties: The challenge is to retain architecturally important and culturally significant historic neighborhood public schools. These important institutions can be recycled economically. Columbia, SC. Photo taken 4 March 2011.
